Jaisalmer Winter Trip from Canada: Golden Fort, Desert Safari & Travel Guide

Jaisalmer and the Thar Desert in the Winter Break from Canada Golden Fort Dunes and How to Get There

A living fort, a night under desert stars, and a city that only opens up in winter. How to fit Jaisalmer into your trip home.

At a glance: a Jaisalmer winter trip from Canada
Jaisalmer is a winter destination. Its airport operates only in the cooler months, roughly late October to late March, and the days sit around 20 to 25°C. From Canada, fly to Delhi (Vancouver–Delhi from CAD $989 per person, checked 15 October 2026, prices change daily), then take Air India’s announced Delhi–Jaisalmer flight. You can also go via Mumbai, fly to Jodhpur and drive, or take the overnight train. Give it three nights, including one at a desert camp near the Sam dunes.

Why the winter break is Jaisalmer's season

Most of the year, Jaisalmer is too hot to enjoy. In summer the airport closes and the camps shut. Then October arrives, and the city wakes up. Three things line up for Canadian families:

  • The airport is open. Jaisalmer (JSA) runs a winter-only schedule, roughly late October to late March. Air India flew Delhi–Jaisalmer twice daily last winter and has announced it again this winter, plus a new daily Mumbai–Jaisalmer non-stop from 25 October 2026 (AI2563, departing 10:00, arriving 11:40). IndiGo may also fly Delhi–Jaisalmer. Check the schedule when you book.
  • The weather is right. Warm, dry days around 20 to 25°C. Cold nights that can drop to about 5°C in the dunes.
  • The dates fit. Ontario schools break from Monday 21 December 2026 to Friday 1 January 2027, with classes back on 4 January. Alberta and BC boards mostly break from around 19 December to 4 January. Arrive in Delhi around 20 to 22 December, see family, do three nights in Jaisalmer, be back for New Year.

The Jaisalmer Desert Festival is in February, after the break. Worth a look on a longer stay.

What to see in Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer Fort. A living fort. Families still live inside, shops line the lanes and the Jain temples are in daily use. The stone glows gold in the morning.

Patwon ki Haveli. Five merchant mansions with lace-like sandstone balconies.

Gadisar Lake. A 14th-century reservoir ringed with temples. Good for an evening walk and a paddle boat.

Bada Bagh. Royal cenotaphs on a low hill. Best at sunset.

Kuldhara. An abandoned village with a story every guide tells differently.

Sam Sand Dunes. About 40 km from town, where the camel safaris and desert camps are. Tanot and the Longewala war memorial are a further 120 km out near the border, a long but moving day trip for grandparents who remember 1971.

A desert camp night with kids and grandparents

The part families worry about most is usually the highlight. What to expect:

  • The tents. Most camps near Sam offer Swiss-style tents with proper beds, an attached bathroom and hot water in the morning. Ask us for family tents.
  • The evening. A camel or jeep ride to the dunes for sunset, folk music by a fire, then dinner. It wraps up by 9 or 10 pm. For older parents, the jeep is easier.
  • The cold. Nights can drop to about 5°C. Camps provide quilts, but ask for extra blankets at check-in, not at midnight. Pack warm hats and socks.
  • Food. Try ker sangri, a desert bean and berry dish, and dal baati churma, baked wheat dumplings with lentils and a sweet crumble. Camps serve milder versions if you ask.
  • The morning. Sunrise over the dunes is quiet and cold. Set an alarm.

7 practical tips for a Jaisalmer winter trip from Canada

1. Carry cash

Camel handlers, small shops in the fort and roadside dhabas take cash. Get rupees in Delhi or Mumbai first.

2. Keep ID on you near the border

Checkpoints on the Tanot road ask for photo ID. Carry your passport or a copy, and your OCI card.

3. Dress in layers

Warm days, cold nights. A fleece, a light jacket and a scarf cover it. See our India winter packing list.

4. Use sunscreen even in December

The desert sun is strong and the sand reflects it.

5. Visit the fort early

Be inside by 8 or 9 am. Cooler, quieter, better photos.

6. Sort the e-Visa and insurance before you leave Canada

Canadian passport holders need an Indian visa or an OCI card. Read our Indian e-Visa guide for Canadians and apply only through the official site, indianvisaonline.gov.in. Domestic flights and road journeys are where insurance earns its place. See our travel insurance guide.

7. Students and education staff: add MannPass

Verified students and education staff in Canada can join Mann Travel Offer for CAD $50 off selected return flights between Canada and India. Valid for 30 days, renewable, not combinable with other promotions.
