You already own the parkas. This is about trading a Canadian December for the Himalayas: a heritage toy train, a colonial hill town, Solang Valley and a tunnel to Lahaul.
At a glance: a Shimla Manali snow trip from Canada
Fly into Delhi, then north to Shimla for two or three nights, on to Manali for three or four, and back through Chandigarh. Nine days fits inside the Canadian winter break. Manali and Solang Valley have reliable snow from December. Shimla’s heaviest snow usually comes in January. The Atal Tunnel to Sissu normally stays open in winter, weather permitting. Rohtang Pass does not. Book Christmas-week hotels now.
Why fly from Canada to see snow?
Fair question. Himachal in winter is not about the snow itself. It is about where it falls.
In Shimla, snow settles on a 19th-century British hill station: a pedestrian Mall Road, a yellow Gothic church and wooden balconies strung along a ridge at 2,200 metres. In Manali, you look up from the valley floor at peaks over 5,000 metres. Nothing in Ontario or BC looks like it. And grandparents in Punjab or Delhi can join you with no visa and a short drive. Home and a holiday in one trip.
Getting there from Canada
Fly to Delhi. Air India runs a daily non-stop from Toronto, and we book one-stop options from Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Edmonton and Winnipeg every week. Search live fares at manntravel.ca/flights.
Route | Approximate time | Best for |
Delhi to Kalka by train, then the toy train to Shimla | About 4 hours to Kalka, then 5 to 6 hours on the narrow gauge | Families who want the UNESCO railway. Book seats early for late December. |
Delhi to Chandigarh by air, then car | About 1 hour flight, then 3 to 4 hours by road to Shimla | Jet-lagged arrivals and travellers with seniors. Least time in a vehicle. |
Delhi to Shimla by road | About 7 to 8 hours | Families collecting relatives in Punjab or Haryana on the way. |
Shimla to Manali by road | About 7 to 8 hours via Bilaspur and Mandi, roughly 250 km | Everyone. There is no rail link. Hire a car and driver in winter. |
Our tip: toy train on the way up, faster road or Chandigarh flight on the way back.
Shimla: Mall Road, Christ Church and the toy train
The Kalka–Shimla Railway opened in 1903 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. It climbs about 96 km through 103 tunnels and over hundreds of bridges in five to six hours. Children count the tunnels. Dress warmly; the carriages are cold in December.
In Shimla itself, give yourselves two full days:
- The Mall and the Ridge. Car-free. Christ Church, one of the oldest churches in north India, tops the Ridge and is lit up at Christmas.
- Kufri. About 16 km above Shimla, so it usually has snow when the town does not. Sledding and a small ski slope.
Be realistic about Shimla snow. The heavy, reliable falls come from late December into February. Christmas week may be crisp and sunny rather than white. That is where Manali comes in.
Manali, Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel to Sissu
Manali sits at about 2,000 metres in the Kullu Valley. From December the slopes are snowy and Solang Valley, 13 km north, is a reliable snow playground: tubing, short ski lessons, a gondola and chai stalls.
The big change is the Atal Tunnel. At just over 9 km, it runs under the Rohtang range and opens up Lahaul in winter. Drive through from Manali and in under an hour you are at Sissu, where the snow is deeper and the air thinner. For a Canadian family it is the most memorable day of the trip.
Two honest caveats:
- Rohtang Pass is closed to tourists in winter. Normally shut from around November to May for snow and avalanche risk. The tunnel is the winter route.
- The Atal Tunnel is open in winter but weather dependent. It stayed open through most of December 2025, then heavy snow blocked the Lahaul road for days in late January 2026. Treat Sissu as a plan, not a promise, and go on the first clear day.
A nine-day plan inside the winter break
Toronto’s public schools break from 21 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, with classes back on 4 January. This plan leaves on the Saturday before the break and uses the full two weeks.
Day | Plan |
Sat 19 Dec | Depart Canada. |
Sun 20 to Mon 21 Dec | Arrive Delhi. One night to rest and collect relatives. |
Tue 22 Dec | Train to Kalka, toy train to Shimla. Evening on the Mall. |
Wed 23 to Thu 24 Dec | Shimla and Kufri. Christmas Eve at Christ Church if you wish. |
Fri 25 Dec | Drive to Manali. Leave early, lunch at Mandi. |
Sat 26 to Mon 28 Dec | Solang Valley, Old Manali and Hadimba Temple. Atal Tunnel to Sissu on the clearest day. |
Tue 29 Dec | Drive to Chandigarh (about 8 to 9 hours). |
Wed 30 Dec to Sat 2 Jan | New Year with relatives in Punjab or Delhi. |
Sun 3 Jan | Fly home. Back at school on Monday 4 January. |
Shorter version: fly Delhi to Chandigarh and drive straight to Manali for four nights. Seven days.
What the weather is really like in December and January
Shimla in late December is typically about -2°C to 10°C, often dry and sunny, with the chance of a snow day. Manali is colder, roughly -5°C to 8°C in town, and Solang and Sissu colder again. Mild for a family from Winnipeg. Not for grandparents from the plains, so pack for them too. Build one spare day into the plan for snow on the roads.
Family and senior tips for a Himachal snow trip
1. Hire a car and driver, not a rental
Local drivers know the roads, carry chains and know when to wait out a storm. For six people, two vehicles beat one. Keep long drives and flights on separate days, with a buffer night in Delhi at each end.
2. Take the altitude slowly with seniors
Shimla and Manali sit around 2,000 to 2,200 metres, which most people handle fine. Sissu is closer to 3,100 metres. Keep that day short and skip it if anyone has heart or breathing issues.
3. Use the winter gear you already own
Your Canadian boots, parkas, toques and mitts beat anything you can rent in Manali. Pack them, plus hand warmers for grandparents.
4. Book hotels for Christmas week now
Shimla and Manali are packed from 24 December to 2 January. Good rooms sell out months ahead. We can book stays through manntravel.ca/hotels alongside your flights.
5. Sort documents early
Canadian passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before December, and check travel.gc.ca for current advice.

frequently asked questions
Is the Atal Tunnel open in December and January?
Usually, yes. The Manali to Sissu road was open through most of December 2025. Heavy snowfall can close it for days at a time, as in late January 2026, so check conditions locally on the day.
Can I visit Rohtang Pass in winter?
No. Rohtang Pass is closed to tourist traffic in winter, normally from around November until spring. Use the Atal Tunnel to reach Sissu and Lahaul instead.
Will there be snow in Shimla at Christmas?
Sometimes. Shimla’s reliable, heavy snow is from late December through January and February. Kufri usually has snow earlier. Manali and Solang Valley have snow from December.
How do I get from Delhi to Shimla and Manali?
Train to Kalka and the toy train up to Shimla, or fly Delhi to Chandigarh and drive three to four hours. Shimla to Manali is 7 to 8 hours by road. Hire a car and driver.
Is this trip suitable for grandparents?
Yes, with care. Shimla and Manali are at about 2,000 metres and most seniors manage well. Keep the Sissu day short because of the altitude, and check with a doctor first.
Road and tunnel conditions, timetables and hotel availability change with the weather. Fares change daily. Check live prices and local conditions before booking.
