From Surrey to the Golden City. The routes, the travel times, the best months and what to expect when you land at Amritsar.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Vancouver to Amritsar?
There is no non-stop flight from Vancouver to Amritsar. Most families fly Vancouver to Delhi, then take a short domestic flight to Amritsar. The whole trip usually takes around 20 to 26 hours. Other options connect through the Gulf or Southeast Asia, often with two stops. October to March is the most comfortable time to visit Punjab. Book two to four months ahead for the best choice of dates, and earlier for December.
Your route options from Vancouver to Amritsar
For many families in Surrey, Abbotsford, Delta and across the Lower Mainland, Amritsar is home. Getting there takes one or two connections. Here are the three main ways to do it.
Via Delhi (the most popular choice)
Air India flies non-stop between Vancouver and Delhi. It is a long flight of around 15 to 16 hours. From Delhi, it is roughly a one-hour hop to Amritsar with Air India, IndiGo and other domestic airlines. Air India’s schedule on this route has changed more than once in the past year, so always check current days of operation before you plan around it.
Via the Gulf
Qatar Airways flies into Amritsar from Doha, and Air India Express links Amritsar with Dubai and Sharjah. From Vancouver, these routings usually need another connection first, in eastern Canada, the US or Europe. That often means two stops in total. They can work well when Delhi fares are high.
Via Southeast Asia
Amritsar has direct flights to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. You can connect across the Pacific this way. Note that Air Canada’s non-stop Vancouver to Singapore flight is reported to end in January 2027. After that, Singapore routings from Vancouver will need an extra stop.
Routing | Stops | Typical total time | Good for |
Vancouver – Delhi – Amritsar | One stop | About 20 to 26 hours | Most families. Simplest trip, and Delhi has plenty of onward flights. |
Via a Gulf hub (Doha, Dubai) | Usually two stops | About 26 to 34 hours | Flying straight into Amritsar and skipping Delhi. |
Via Southeast Asia (Singapore, Kuala Lumpur) | One or two stops | About 26 to 34 hours | Flexible travellers comparing fares. |
Times are rough guides and include connections. Your actual time depends on the airline, date and layover.

The best months to fly to Amritsar
Punjab has strong seasons, and it is worth planning around them.
October to November: pleasant weather and a festive feel. Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas at the Golden Temple are a special time to be home.
December to January: cool days and cold nights. Thick morning fog often delays flights in Delhi and Amritsar. Leave extra time between connections.
February to March: mild and comfortable. A lovely time for weddings and family visits. Good for March break too.
April to June: Vaisakhi in April is busy and joyful. By May and June it gets very hot.
July to September: monsoon season. Humid, with rain showers. Often quieter for fares.
7 tips for a smoother Vancouver to Amritsar trip
1. Book through to Amritsar on one ticket
If your Delhi flight is late and you miss your connection, one ticket means the airline has to rebook you. With two separate tickets, you are on your own.
2. Give yourself a comfortable layover
Arriving in Delhi from Canada means immigration, customs and often a terminal change. Three hours or more is kinder, especially with elderly parents or small children.
3. Check your baggage on every leg
Allowances vary by airline and fare. A through ticket from Canada usually carries your international allowance to Amritsar. A separate domestic-only ticket inside India often allows less. Check before you pack gifts, sweets and suitcases for the whole family.
4. Plan around the winter fog
In December and January, pick a longer connection or a daytime arrival into Amritsar where you can. It lowers the stress if the fog rolls in.
5. Book December and Vaisakhi early
These dates are popular with Punjabi families all over Canada. Two to four months ahead is a good rule. Earlier is better for Christmas and New Year.
6. Students and teachers, use MannPass
Verified students and education staff in Canada can join MannPass for free. It takes $25 off selected return flights between Canada and India. It is valid for 30 days, can be renewed, and can’t be combined with other offers.
7. Get your documents sorted early
Canadian passport holders need an Indian visa or an OCI card. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly.
Travelling with family: arriving at Amritsar
Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport is about 11 km from the centre of Amritsar. It is a calm, manageable airport, much smaller than Delhi. Most families are met by relatives, and the drive into the city is usually short.
