Baggage Allowance and Gifts: Flying Canada to India This Winter Without Paying Extra

Winter break, gifts for everyone, and a coat you will not need until you land back in Canada. Here is how to pack it all without a surprise bill at the counter.

At a glance: what is the baggage allowance from Canada to India?
Your baggage allowance Canada to India depends on your airline and fare type, not on the route. With full-service carriers it is often two checked bags per adult, plus a cabin bag and a small personal item. Basic fares can include less. Check the allowance printed on your own ticket, not a friend’s. Heavy gifts and food go in checked bags. Electronics and anything with a lithium battery stay in the cabin. Declare high-value goods when you arrive.

How baggage allowance Canada to India actually works

Every December we take calls from families at the check-in counter with an extra suitcase and a fee they did not expect. The rules are not complicated, but they differ for every airline and every fare.

There are three parts to your allowance:

  • Checked bags. The suitcases that go in the hold. Your ticket says how many pieces you get and the maximum weight per piece.
  • Cabin bag. Goes in the overhead bin. Size limit, and often a weight limit too.
  • Personal item. A small bag under the seat, such as a handbag or laptop bag.

Most Canada–India fares use the piece concept. You get a set number of bags, each up to a set weight. Some fares, and some domestic Indian carriers, use a weight concept instead, where your total checked weight is capped no matter how many bags it fills.

On full-service airlines, the allowance is often two checked bags per adult. Often, not always. Some fare types include one bag, and the most basic can include none. Two people in the same row can have different allowances. Read your own ticket.

What to check before you pack

Ten minutes with this table saves money at the airport.

What to check

Where to find it

Why it matters

Checked bags

Your e-ticket or booking confirmation

Number of pieces and weight per piece. Two is common on Canada–India with full-service carriers, but not on every fare.

Cabin bag

The airline’s baggage page

Limits are enforced more strictly at some airports than others. A winter coat counts once it is in the bag.

Personal item

The airline’s baggage page

Usually one small bag. A second one may be counted as a cabin bag and charged.

Infant allowance

Your booking, or ask us

Lap infants usually get a smaller allowance than an adult. Many airlines carry a stroller or car seat free, but confirm before you rely on it.

Excess fees

The airline’s website, before you fly

Charged per extra piece or per unit over the limit. Buying extra before you fly is usually cheaper than at the counter.

Through ticket

Your itinerary

If your domestic Indian leg is on the same ticket, the international allowance usually applies all the way. On a separate ticket, the domestic airline’s own rules apply.

Packing gifts for India: what goes where

Winter-break trips carry a particular kind of luggage. Chocolates for the cousins. Maple syrup for the uncle who asks every year. A laptop for a nephew starting college. And, somewhere in there, your own clothes.

Into the checked bags

  • Chocolates, maple syrup, cookies and packaged Canadian treats. Syrup is a liquid, so a full bottle cannot go in your cabin bag. Wrap it in a plastic bag and a sweater.
  • Clothing, shoes, bedding and most household gifts.
  • Toiletries, creams and perfumes in sizes above the cabin liquid limit.

Into the cabin

  • Phones, laptops, tablets, cameras and anything valuable or fragile.
  • Power banks and spare lithium batteries. These must stay in the cabin. Loose lithium batteries in checked bags are not allowed.
  • Medication, documents and one change of clothes in case a bag is delayed.

Leave at home, or check the rules first

  • Aerosols are limited in number and size. A can of deodorant is fine. A box is not.
  • Anything that looks like a commercial quantity. Twenty identical phone cases is a shop, not a gift.
  • Fresh food, meat and dairy, in either direction. Both countries restrict them.

7 smart packing tips for the winter break

1. Weigh at home

Bathroom scales are close enough to catch a bag that is clearly over. Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the bag. A cheap luggage scale is better still, and fits in a pocket for the return.

2. Spread the heavy things

Four bags under the limit beat three under and one over. Excess is charged on the bag that is over, not averaged across the family.

3. Pack the return coat on top

Vancouver in January is not Mumbai in January. Fold your winter coat on top of your last-day clothes so you can grab it before landing, or wear it on the flight.

4. Leave room for the way home

Spices, sweets, silk, cotton. Whatever comes back needs space. Pack a foldable duffel inside a suitcase on the way out.

5. Buy extra bags before you fly

If you already know you are over, buy the extra allowance when you book or before departure. Counter prices are higher almost everywhere.

6. Keep gifts unwrapped

Security in either country may open them. Wrap on arrival with paper from the local market.

7. Students and education staff: use MannPass

Verified students and education staff in Canada can join MannPass for free. It takes CAD $25 off eligible return flights between Canada and India. It is valid for 30 days from verification, students re-verify each term, and it cannot be combined with other promotions.

Customs: arriving in India and coming home to Canada

Customs rules are set by governments, not airlines, and they change. We will not quote figures here. The principles hold.

Arriving in India. Personal effects for your own use pass through the green channel. High-value goods, new electronics beyond personal use, gold and large amounts of currency should be declared. Gifts in commercial quantities can attract duty. If you are not sure, use the red channel and ask.

Coming home to Canada. The Canada Border Services Agency sets personal exemption limits based on how long you were away. Check the current figures on travel.gc.ca before you shop. Food, plant and animal products are restricted. Packaged spices and sweets are usually fine. Fresh produce, meat and dairy usually are not. Declare everything edible. The penalty for not declaring is worse than any duty.

One more word on through tickets. Connect in Delhi or Mumbai on the same ticket and your international allowance usually travels with you. On a separate domestic ticket you may be re-checking bags under a lower allowance and paying the difference. We walk through the Bengaluru example in our Vancouver to Bengaluru route guide.
