There is no non-stop flight, but there are three good ways to do it. Here is how Calgary families choose, and how to keep a winter trip simple.
Quick answer: how do I fly from Calgary to Amritsar?
No airline flies Calgary to Amritsar non-stop. Most families take one of three routes: Calgary to Vancouver or Toronto, then a non-stop to Delhi, then a short domestic flight or a car to Amritsar. Or Calgary to a Gulf or European hub that flies straight into Amritsar. Allow 22 to 30 hours door to door. In winter, leave extra time at both ends. Book all legs on one ticket so a late connection is the airline’s problem, not yours.
Why there is no non-stop from Calgary to Amritsar
Calgary has a large and growing Punjabi community, especially across the northeast. Many of us have parents in villages near Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Moga and Amritsar itself. So the question comes up every week: why can I not just fly straight there?
The short version is that non-stop long-haul flights go where the biggest numbers are. From Canada, that means Delhi, and the non-stops leave from Toronto and Vancouver. Amritsar’s airport, Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International, has international flights, but they come in from the Gulf, the UK and parts of Asia, not from Canada.
Three ways to get from Calgary to Amritsar
Here is how the main options compare. Times are typical totals including connections. Your dates and airline will change them.
Route | Legs | Typical total | Pros and cons |
Via Vancouver and Delhi | Calgary–Vancouver, Vancouver–Delhi non-stop, Delhi–Amritsar by air or road | 22–28 hours | Short first hop and a long non-stop. Often the best-value option from the west. Delhi fog can slow the last leg in winter. |
Via Toronto and Delhi | Calgary–Toronto, Toronto–Delhi non-stop, Delhi–Amritsar by air or road | 24–30 hours | More daily choice on the long-haul leg. Longer first hop, and a longer day overall. |
Via a Gulf or European hub | Calgary–hub, hub–Amritsar direct | 24–30 hours | Lands you in Amritsar with no Delhi leg at all. Great for seniors and big luggage. Fewer weekly flights on the hub–Amritsar sector, so dates matter. |
Delhi to Amritsar by air is about an hour and a quarter in the air. By road it is roughly seven to nine hours, depending on traffic and stops. Many families prefer the drive when a relative is picking them up anyway. Others, especially with elderly parents, prefer the short flight and a shorter car ride at the end.
We covered the Delhi leg from Calgary in detail last week. See our flights page for live Calgary–Delhi options rather than repeating it here.
Winter travel: build in buffers
Most Calgary families fly between late November and January. That is the best time to be in Punjab, with cool mornings, wedding season and Lohri on Thursday 14 January 2027. It is also the season when both ends of your trip can be slow.
In Calgary, a snowstorm or a frozen ramp can delay your first short flight. If that leg is late, everything after it is at risk.
In Delhi, December and January mornings bring dense fog. Flights to Amritsar can be delayed or cancelled, sometimes with little notice. The road is affected too, with slower, more careful driving.
So plan for it. Allow at least three hours between flights in Canada in winter, and more in Delhi. If you can, choose a Delhi–Amritsar flight later in the day, after the fog usually lifts.
One ticket, one airline responsibility
This is the single most useful thing we tell Calgary travellers. If your Calgary–Vancouver–Delhi–Amritsar journey is on one ticket, and a leg runs late, the airline has to rebook you onward at no extra cost. Your bags are checked through to Amritsar. You do not clear immigration and re-check in Delhi.
If you buy a separate domestic ticket to Amritsar to save a little, you own the risk. Miss that flight because of fog and you buy a new one. On a winter trip, we almost always recommend keeping everything on one booking. Our team checks this for you before you pay.
6 tips for families flying Calgary to Amritsar
1. Book early for the winter break
The non-stops to Delhi fill first, and the Gulf hub flights into Amritsar have fewer seats to begin with. For late December and early January, booking in October or early November gives you the most choice of dates and seats together.
2. Travelling with parents or grandparents?
Ask us to request wheelchair assistance at every airport on the route, including Delhi and Amritsar. We can also request Indian vegetarian or diabetic meals, and seats near the aisle. If a long Delhi connection is hard on them, the hub route straight into Amritsar may be worth a little more.
3. Pack for two climates
You leave Calgary in minus 20 and land in a Punjab winter that feels mild by day and surprisingly cold at night, with no central heating in many homes. A warm layer for evenings and a shawl or light jacket for the plane is all you need.
4. Students at U of C, SAIT and Mount Royal
Many of our Calgary bookings are students going home for the break. If you are a verified student or work in education, join MannPass. It is free and takes CAD $25 off eligible return flights between Canada and India. It is valid for 30 days from verification, so join when you are ready to book.
5. Keep your documents in hand luggage
Your passport, OCI card or Indian visa, and a printed copy of your full itinerary. If you need a visa, apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly. Check the Government of Canada’s travel advice for India before you go.
6. Arriving at Amritsar airport
Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport is small and easy to get through. It sits a short drive from the city, so you can be at the Golden Temple or on the road to your village quickly. Pre-arranged taxis and family pick-ups are the norm. If you are visiting Harmandir Sahib for the first time, read our Golden Temple visitor guide for Canadian families.
What does it cost from Calgary?
Calgary-origin and Amritsar fares are quoted on request, because they depend on the routing and the day. As a reference, our Vancouver to Delhi return fares start from CAD $989 per person, checked 7 October 2026. Prices change daily. A Calgary start and an Amritsar finish add two shorter legs, so expect a higher total, and expect it to move with the season.
