What Bandi Chhor Divas means
Bandi Chhor Divas means “Day of Liberation”. It marks the return of the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, to Amritsar after his release from Gwalior Fort. The Guru refused to leave unless 52 imprisoned kings were freed with him. He found a way to bring them all out together.
When he reached Amritsar, the people lit up the Harmandir Sahib to welcome him. That welcome is still repeated every year. For many Sikh families in Canada, being there in person, even once, is a dream. For kids born here, it is a powerful way to connect with where they come from.
What happens in Amritsar on the day
Amritsar is at its most beautiful, and its busiest, on Bandi Chhor Divas.
Illuminations. The Golden Temple complex glows with lamps, candles and lights. Their reflection on the sarovar is something families remember for life.
Fireworks. Traditionally there is a fireworks display over the complex in the evening.
Kirtan and prayer. Kirtan continues through the day, and many people come to do ardaas and seva.
Crowds. Expect very large crowds, especially from late afternoon. Lanes around the temple fill up, and queues to enter the Darbar Sahib can be long.
Langar. The langar keeps serving everyone, as it does every day.
When to fly from Canada to Amritsar
Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport has no non-stop flights from Canada. Most families fly one-stop. A common option is a flight to Delhi with a short domestic connection to Amritsar. Other one-stop routes connect through hubs in the Gulf or Asia.

Where to stay in Amritsar
For Bandi Chhor Divas, location matters more than luxury.
Near the Golden Temple. Staying within walking distance means no traffic on the night. The lanes close to the complex get very busy, and cars often can’t get through.
A little further out. Hotels on the main roads can be quieter and easier with a car, but plan to walk the last part.
Sarais. The Golden Temple has sarais for pilgrims. They fill up at festival time, so don’t count on a room.

7 tips for families visiting on Bandi Chhor Divas
1. Cover your head
Everyone covers their head inside the complex, men, women and children. Bring a scarf or patka. Scarves are also available at the entrance.
2. Shoes and socks off
Leave shoes at the free shoe stand (joda ghar) and wash your feet before entering. Keep the token safe. On a crowded night, agree on which shoe stand you are using.
3. Visit early, then find a spot
Go in the morning or early afternoon for darshan. Then find a place around the parikrama to sit before the evening crowds build.
4. Pick a meeting point
Crowds are heavy. Choose a clear landmark and make sure every child knows it. A card in each child’s pocket with a parent’s Indian phone number helps too.
5. Pack for cool evenings
November days in Amritsar are pleasant, but evenings get cool. Sitting on marble for hours feels colder than you expect. Bring a shawl or light jacket and warm socks.
6. Eat at the langar
Sit on the floor in rows and accept the food with both hands. Kids love it, and it is one of the best lessons in seva they will ever get.
7. Be respectful with photos
Photos around the parikrama are common, but keep phones away inside the Darbar Sahib. No tobacco or alcohol anywhere near the complex.
Practical notes for Canadian travellers
Visa or OCI. Canadian passport holders need an Indian visa or OCI card. Apply early through the official Indian visa website.

Air quality. Air quality in northern India can be poor in November. If anyone in the family has asthma, pack their medication.
