Two weeks off school, mild sunny days, biryani with the grandparents. Here is how to plan it, and why staying on for Sankranti is worth a thought.
At a glance: a Hyderabad trip from Canada in the winter break
Ontario school boards break from Monday 21 December 2026 to Friday 1 January 2027, with classes back on Monday 4 January. BC and Alberta dates are similar, so check your board. Hyderabad in December and January is mild and dry, roughly 15 to 29°C. There is no non-stop flight from Canada, so you fly one-stop via the Gulf from Toronto, or via Delhi or Mumbai with a domestic leg. Book now, as late-December seats go first.
Why the winter break works for a Hyderabad trip
For Telugu families in Mississauga, Brampton, Surrey, Calgary and Edmonton, the winter break is often the only two-week window that lines up with the whole family’s leave. It also lands in Hyderabad’s best season. Mornings are cool, afternoons are warm and the monsoon is long gone. After a Canadian November, that alone is reason enough.
The 2026–27 dates are generous. Ontario boards close on Monday 21 December and reopen on Monday 4 January, so you get the full two weeks plus the weekend before. BC and Alberta boards run a similar break; check your own calendar, as a day’s difference can change your fare.
If you can stretch the trip, Sankranti falls on or around 14 January 2027. Some families fly out on 19 or 20 December and return after the festival, taking a week of extra school. That is a family decision, but mid-January returns are often easier to find than seats on the first weekend of January, when everyone else is flying home.
What to see in Hyderabad with the kids
Hyderabad is easy with children. Distances are short, the weather is kind and most sights take half a day. These work for a family with grandparents in tow.
Place | Good for | Family tip |
Charminar and Laad Bazaar | History, bangles, street food | Go early in the morning before the lanes fill. Kids love the bangle stalls; keep a hand on the little ones. |
Golconda Fort | A big outdoor walk | Lots of steps. Do it on a cool morning and skip it for grandparents with sore knees. |
Chowmahalla Palace | A calm, pretty half-day | Courtyards and vintage cars. Easy on older relatives. |
Salar Jung Museum | Rainy-day backup, curious kids | The clock and the sculpture gallery hold children’s attention. Allow two hours. |
Hussain Sagar and Necklace Road | Evening stroll, boat ride | Sunset boat rides to the Buddha statue. Lumbini Park is next door. |
Birla Mandir | Temple visit, city views | White marble on a hill. Best at dusk when the lights come on. |
Ramoji Film City | A full day out | About an hour from the city. Book tickets ahead for the holiday fortnight. |
Eat your way through the city
Nobody needs telling to eat biryani in Hyderabad. The Canadian-raised kids may need telling that dum biryani here is a different thing from the one at home. Order it with mirchi ka salan and let the grandparents choose the restaurant; they will have an opinion.
Irani chai with Osmania biscuits is the other must. The old cafés near Charminar and in Abids are a good stop between sights and cost very little. Finish with double ka meetha or qubani ka meetha.
Getting there: flights from Canada to Hyderabad
There is no non-stop flight from Canada to Hyderabad. Two main choices:
One stop via the Gulf. Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad fly from Toronto to Hyderabad with one stop in Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi. For GTA families this is the simplest route: one ticket, one connection, no domestic leg. Our Toronto to Hyderabad guide has the details.
Via Delhi or Mumbai. Air Canada and Air India fly non-stop from Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal to Delhi and Mumbai. From there it is a two-hour domestic flight to Hyderabad. For BC and Alberta families this is often the practical route. If the domestic flight is a separate ticket, allow at least three hours to clear immigration, collect bags and check in again.
On fares: today our homepage shows Vancouver to Delhi from CAD $989 and Vancouver to Mumbai from CAD $996 per person one-way (checked 12 October 2026, prices change daily). Hyderabad fares vary with the route and date, and the domestic leg is extra, so call us for a live quote on your dates. 6 tips for a smooth winter-break trip to Hyderabad
1. Book in October, not December
The last two weekends before Christmas are the busiest departure days of the year for Canada–India flights, and the lower fare classes close early. October is still a good window. Book now and stay flexible by a day or two.
2. Fly out a day or two before the break starts
Leaving on Friday 18 or Saturday 19 December instead of Monday 21 often means a better fare and a calmer airport.
3. Decide on Sankranti before you book the return
If there is any chance you will stay for Sankranti, book the later return now. Changing a date in January, when seats are tight, costs more than choosing the right one in October.
4. Plan the airport transfer
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) is at Shamshabad, about 25 to 35 km south of the city. Pushpak airport buses serve the city, and the Outer Ring Road makes taxis and family pick-ups quick outside peak hours. With sleepy children and several bags, a pre-arranged car is easiest.
5. Pack for two climates
You leave Canada in boots and arrive to 28°C afternoons. Mornings can be 15°C, so pack a light layer. Our guide to what to pack for India in winter covers the full list, including where to leave the parkas.
6. Students and staff: check MannPass
Verified students and education staff in Canada can join Mann travel’s latest Offer for CAD $50 off selected return flights between Canada and India. It is valid for 30 days, renewable, and cannot be combined with other promotions.
Practical notes for families
- Documents. Canadian passport holders need an Indian visa or an OCI card for every traveller, including children. Apply through the official Indian visa website well before you fly.
- Insurance. Worth it with grandparents and young children. Read our guide to travel insurance for an India trip from Canada.
- Hotels. Need a hotel for part of the trip? Book Hyderabad hotels with us at manntravel.ca/hotels.
- Jet lag. Hyderabad is 10.5 hours ahead of Toronto and 13.5 ahead of Vancouver in winter. Give the kids a quiet first day; Necklace Road at sunset is a gentle start.
- One booking for everyone. It keeps the family seated together and makes changes simpler.
